What goes through your mind when you get shot?

Derrick McManus, former STAR Group officer and founder of Human Durability, speaking with podcast host Aleksandra King on The BEYOND Podcast. Derrick McManus says the highly trained are allowed thoughts outside the square while still doing everything needed, and recalls telling himself, while being shot, that falling over was quite acceptable.

Derrick McManus describes being shot. He fell and berated himself, with no idea what was happening until gunfire and small round holes explained the fall. What he told himself next shows a trained mind holding a thought outside the square while the job gets done.

He stresses that this was literally what he thought, and that the latitude for it rests on knowing exactly what he is doing. Next the conversation turns to how strange the human body can be.
